Selling on a deadline? What sellers need to know

Edited

Moving, remodeling, traveling, or just need a piece gone fast? When you create a listing, you can set a deadline — the date by which you absolutely need your item picked up. Here's how it works and what it can (and can't) guarantee.

What is a Pickup Deadline?

Your Pickup Deadline is the date you enter when creating your listing that tells us — and buyers — when your item absolutely needs to be out of your home. Providing this "end date" for your listing is critical for sellers on a tight timeline.

Why do I need to set one?

Your deadline lets us automatically remove your listing from the marketplace when it's no longer realistic for a buyer to purchase and schedule pickup in time. Without it, a buyer could purchase your item too late and be disappointed — which is a bad outcome for both of you.

What happens when my deadline passes?

Your listing will be unpublished 2-7 days before your Pickup Deadline date, depending on your delivery service zone. This is intentional, and it protects you from a last-minute sale that can't physically be fulfilled in time. We build in this buffer so that any purchase has time to coordinate pickup and delivery.

Does setting a deadline mean my item is guaranteed to sell before then?

No. A deadline tells buyers you're motivated and helps us manage listing visibility, but it doesn't guarantee a sale. Furniture resale depends on buyer demand, pricing, condition, and timing — all of which are outside our control. We recommend treating your deadline as a planning tool, not a promise.

What can I do to improve my chances of selling before my deadline?

  • The #1 thing you can do is monitor your listing closely, and respond quickly to buyer questions and offers

  • Set a realistic deadline and post as early as you can to give yourself breathing room

  • Price competitively from the start rather than waiting to discount later

  • Add clear, well-lit photos and an honest, detailed description

What happens if my deadline passes and my item hasn't sold?

Your listing is unpublished. From there, you'll need to make other arrangements for the item — donation, disposal, or another resale channel. If your timeline changes, you can repost your listing with an updated deadline.

Can I change my deadline after I've listed?

Yes, you can update your deadline from your listing settings as long as the item hasn't sold. Keep in mind that shortening your deadline reduces the time buyers have to purchase and schedule pickup.

Why can't AptDeco just guarantee a pickup by my deadline?

We move as quickly as we can! A successful sale requires a willing buyer, and pickup or delivery requires timely scheduling coordination on both ends. Setting a deadline helps us protect that process — it doesn't override the reality that selling secondhand furniture takes an interested buyer and logistics take a reasonable lead time.
